Pastors today face immense pressure to water down the biblical message. “Keep quiet on social and political issues,” they hear. “Your job is only to preach the gospel!” But pastors who separate the Bible from real life are not being faithful to preach the “whole purpose of God” (Acts 20:27).
If pastors speak out on politics or culture, groups like the American Civil Liberties Union or Americans United for the Separation of Church and State will try to intimidate them. But no church has ever lost its tax-exempt status for speaking on politics. Even if it did, that would be no reason for the church to cower and keep silent. Jesus has called us to be salt and light in the world.
Do you want to remain free? Then pray for pastors to preach God’s Word boldly. Ask God to give them courage to apply the Bible to every area of life. Encourage them to promote godliness and to oppose evil. Ask God to protect them from Satan’s schemes and temptations. For “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Prov. 14:34). This is the Bible’s prescription for making any nation great.
A Prayer for America
Heavenly Father, motivate pastors in America to boldly preach the truth in love. Give them courage. Give them wisdom and skill to rightly divide Your Word. May Christians across our nation support godly pastors and not make their jobs any harder than necessary. And may we apply their biblical teaching to every area of our lives—including my own. In Your name I pray, Lord Jesus. Amen.
Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
—2 Timothy 4:2
