40 Days of Praying

For Our Debt Problems

By October 8, 2020No Comments

Living within our means requires maturity and delayed gratification. The apostle Paul demonstrated this attitude in Philippians 4:11: “Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.”

At the federal level, it will require politicians to put national interests before reelection chances and make tough decisions to cut unnecessary spending. Pray that our nation’s leaders will put the well-being of our children and grandchildren ahead of their own short-term political reelections. And pray that God gives them wisdom on how best to do this. Pray the same for our state and local government officials. On the personal side, make sure that you are not accumulating debt that you have no means to pay back. If overspending is a temptation for you, then ask God to teach you contentment and wisdom. If you are drowning in debt, seek help by enrolling in a debt-elimination program like Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University.

Whatever the situation, be it personal, local, or national, we must spend less than we make, and we must pay down our debt. And we must do it fast. A day of reckoning is coming.

A Prayer for America

Heavenly Father, teach me contentment and self-control. Forgive me when I ignore your wisdom, which You so generously give. Help me act responsibly and face the problems before me with courage and urgency. May I not pass off my financial responsibilities to my children and grandchildren. Help me to be disciplined and pay down my debts. Give our nation’s leaders courage, wisdom, and a holy fear of You to make the tough decisions that reduce our expenses before the national debt crushes the next generation. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for taking my sin debt upon Yourself and paying it on the cross. Just like our nation’s increasing financial burden, my sin debt against You was always increasing. Thank You for paying that debt for me. Teach me to live responsibly as a good steward of all You have given me. In Your name I pray. Amen.

There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise,

But a foolish man swallows it up.
