40 Days of Praying

For Our State and Local Leaders

In modern politics, we often forget about our state and local officials. This is tragic because our founders envisioned most of the power residing there. Each state is supposed to be its own small government that checks federal power. That is why our nation is called the United States of America. That is also why each state—regardless of population—is given two senators. The Senate helps balance the House of Representatives (which is based on population) and helps prevent a mobocracy.

State and local officials need our prayers just as much as our federal leaders do. First, pray that they make wise choices on behalf of us, their constituents. Second, pray that they accept the responsibilities of their position and not look immediately to the federal government to solve all their problems. Finally, ask God if He wants you to become more involved in local politics, or to even run for state or local office. Our nation needs godly people in every level of government.

A Prayer for America

Heavenly Father, give wisdom and courage to my local and state officials. May they govern with integrity and make laws that honor You. Thank You that I live in a country that was founded on biblical principles. Help me be a good steward of Your blessings and to live with wisdom, courage, and integrity, knowing that one day I will stand before You to give an account of how I stewarded Your blessings. And thank You, Lord Jesus, for saving me from my sins. In Your name I pray. Amen.

Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.
